What makes the picture particularly worrying for the bottom four is the narrow margin to those immediately above them. Nottingham Forest and AFC Bournemouth each have a single point from their opening two fixtures, keeping them just above the dotted line but hardly comfortable.

Three further clubs on zero points sit just outside the relegation places. Fulham, Sunderland, and Manchester United have all lost their only game played so far, with United carrying a -2 goal difference into the coming weeks.

The compact nature of the lower mid-table means a single result could dramatically alter the picture, but for the sides currently stranded on nothing, the pressure is mounting quickly.
