Odds Watch: City Favourites in the Derby as the Market Defies the Table

With three rounds played, according to the Premier League table, the weekend's card is headlined by the Manchester derby — and the market's early verdict is already in.

City fancied at Old Trafford

The latest match odds in our data price Manchester City at 2.22 to win away at Manchester United, with the hosts at 3.25 and the draw at 4.0 — implying roughly a 45 per cent chance of an away win against just over 30 per cent for United. It is a decisive tilt towards the visitors, who lead the way with nine points from nine according to the Premier League table, with United 11th on four.

Favourites the table does not recognise

The round's strangest prices belong to two sides yet to win. Tottenham Hotspur, 17th with one point and no goals scored in three matches according to the Premier League table, are 2.08 favourites at home to Everton (3.85), who arrive eighth and unbeaten. Aston Villa's price is similarly defiant: winless, 18th and also without a goal, they are 2.22 at home to Nottingham Forest (3.75), despite Forest having drawn two of their three games.

The tightest call on the card

AFC Bournemouth (2.6) against Brentford (2.9) is the closest thing to a coin flip, even though unbeaten Brentford sit fifth and Bournemouth are 15th and still winless, according to the Premier League table. The market can barely split them.

Heavyweights at short prices

Arsenal carry the shortest away price of the round at 1.53 to win at Sunderland (7.8), implying roughly a 65 per cent chance. Liverpool are tighter still at 1.47 at home to Fulham (7.0), who remain pointless but have scored four goals according to the Premier League table.

The rest of the card

Crystal Palace are 1.92 against Ipswich Town (4.3) in Saturday's early kick-offs, while Leeds United (2.44) host Newcastle United (3.05) on Monday night — the hosts favoured despite sitting three places below sixth-placed Newcastle in the table.

Still to be priced

Chelsea against Hull City and Coventry City against Brighton & Hove Albion have no odds in our data yet. Hull are the story there: third, unbeaten, with three goals scored and none conceded, according to the Premier League standings.
