Gameweek 1 roundup: Manchester City set the pace as Brighton hit four

Gameweek 1 of the 2026-27 Premier League season is in the books, and the opening round belonged to the hosts. Seven of the ten fixtures ended in home wins, Leeds United and Chelsea were the only sides to triumph on the road, and Newcastle United and Liverpool shared the points in the round's only draw. City set the early pace

According to the Premier League table, Manchester City top the division with 15 points and a perfect record — five wins from five — after their 2-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth, with 13 goals scored along the way. Arsenal sit second on 12 points with four straight wins, the latest a 3-0 success against Coventry City. Brighton & Hove Albion complete the leading trio on 10 points following their 4-0 rout of Aston Villa, and no team in the table has scored more than the Seagulls' 16 goals.

Hull take the spoils against United

Hull City AFC beat Manchester United 2-0 to climb to eighth on eight points on the back of consecutive wins, while United stay 12th on five points with a single victory from five matches. Brentford's 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur left a similar mark on the table: the Bees are fourth on nine points and still unbeaten — two wins and three draws from five — whereas Spurs prop up the division on two points, winless, with just two goals scored.

Draws, away days and a five-goal contest

Newcastle United and Liverpool drew 2-2, with Liverpool remaining unbeaten in sixth on nine points after back-to-back draws, and Newcastle sitting ninth on eight. Everton's 2-0 win over Crystal Palace lifted them to seventh on nine points, also unbeaten, while Palace drop to 15th on four. Leeds United edged Nottingham Forest 1-0 away from home to occupy fifth on nine points, with Forest 13th on five. Ipswich Town's 2-1 win over Sunderland AFC moved them up to 11th on six points, with the Black Cats 14th on four.

The round's highest-scoring contest came at Fulham, where Chelsea won 3-2 to climb to 10th on seven points with back-to-back victories. Fulham are 19th on two points after a third consecutive defeat.

Trouble at the bottom

Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham are both stuck on two points, with Spurs bottom of the table on goal difference. Coventry City (18th) and AFC Bournemouth (17th) each have three points: Bournemouth remain winless with three draws from five, while Coventry have managed only one goal all season and are on a run of four straight defeats. For all of them, Gameweek 2 brings an early chance to respond.
